ABES HISTORY

​

     ANDRES BONIFACIO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL was established in 1949 at 10th Avenue, Caloocan City. Its school head was Dr. Modesta G. Boquiren who later became the Regional Director of DECS-NCR.

In 1950, ABES moved to its present site because the previous building belonged to Caloocan High School. The site was a spacious compound of 18,242 sq. m owned by Manila Railroad Company now PNR, located at Torres Bugallon St., Sangandaan, Caloocan City.

     The school buildings were of Spanish type with walls and partitions made of “sawali”. During the period from 1952 to 1956, more classrooms were constructed due to the increase in enrolment and so with the number of teachers from 15 to 25.

     Dr. Modesta G. Boquiren left for United States as a scholar and Mr. Prudencio Cordeta became the school head. In 1971, Dr. Boquiren returned as a principal but was promoted as a District Supervisor.

     As a result of tremendous escalation in school pupil population, additional teachers were hired bringing its total to 83. Additional school buildings were constructed through the Parents-Teachers Association. No government buildings were built because the site belongs to PNR. Parents and teachers rallied to as far as Malacañang Palace for the acquisition of the lot. Through God’s intervention and through the help of the people who supported us in our plea, we are hopeful that the site will soon be donated to us by the PNR, At present, there is an agreement between PNR and the City of Caloocan through the initiative of Cong. Edgar Erice for the construction of additional school buildings. Everything is possible through fervent prayers.

     In 1991, Secretary Isidro Cariño designed a building named after him and ABES was so lucky to have this Cariño type of building where the Science Room was located, the pride of the school. It became the best Science Room in the district and the division winning 2nd place in the Search for the Most Functional Science Room and 3rd place in the Philippine Science Fair, both regional level in SY 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 consecutively. It was through the effort of its principal, Dr. Abigail S. Ignacio and the Science coordinator, Mrs. Natividad Lopez.

     The following have been the pillars of the school after Dr. Modesta G. Boquiren. Each one has worked in making ABES what it is today. They have left legacy and memories to ponder on.

     At present, ABES has continuously journeyed to face the challenges of this world. It has continued making her as the best school not only in the district but also in the division and possibly in the region. It is hoped, with all the aspiration, dedication, initiative and innovation of the ABES family, they will be empowered to produce learners who are not only functionally literates but are ready for lifelong learning, active makers of meaning, competent in learning how to learn and have life skills, self-awareness, empathy, effective communication, decision-making, problem solving, creative, critical thinking, understanding one’s emotions, coping with stress, interpersonal skills and productive entrepreneurial skills.
